The Importance of Sanitizing Your RV Water Tank

Your RV water tank is the source of water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning while on your travels. Ensuring it’s clean and sanitized is essential for your health and comfort. Bacteria, algae, and other contaminants can accumulate over time, leading to unpleasant tastes, odors, and potential health risks if not properly cleaned.

Steps to Sanitize Your RV Water Tank

Gather The Necessary Supplies

Before starting, make sure you have the following supplies on hand:

Bleach or a specialized RV sanitizer

Clean hose

Measuring cup

Gloves

Funnel (optional)

Drain the Tank

Empty the current contents of your RV water tank by locating the drain valve and allowing all the water to flow out. Make sure all faucets and showers are turned off.

Prepare the Sanitizing Solution

Prepare the sanitizing solution by mixing water and either bleach or a specialized RV sanitizer. A common ratio is ¼ cup of bleach per 15 gallons of water. Be cautious when handling bleach and follow safety instructions. Alternatively, you can use a specialized RV sanitizing solution following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Fill The Tank

Using a clean hose, fill the RV water tank with the sanitizing solution. If your tank has a gravity fill, pour the solution carefully into the tank using a funnel if necessary.

Run Water Through the System

Turn on each faucet, one at a time, until you smell the bleach solution. This includes both hot and cold faucets, as well as showers until each is flowing with the solution. 

Let It Sit

Allow the solution to sit in the tank and the water lines for at least 12 hours, or follow the recommended time on the sanitizer’s instructions. This helps thoroughly sanitize the entire system.

Drain and Rinse

After the allotted time, drain the tank completely once again. Flush the system by filling the tank with fresh water and repeating the process of running water through each faucet, shower, and toilet until the bleach smell dissipates.

Test the Water

Once you’ve rinsed the system thoroughly, test the water by filling a clean container and checking for any unusual odors or tastes. If needed, repeat the rinsing process until the water is clear and odorless.

Regular Maintenance

To maintain cleanliness, sanitize your RV water tank at least once a year or after periods of prolonged storage. Additionally, consider using a water filtration system or water purification tablets to further enhance water quality during your travels.
